DSC01900THE GOATS

The herd has expanded!

Jess is now head of a herd of fourteen goats including does, kids, wethers and even a billy goat.  Dave the billy, or buck, is such a sweet tempered creature that he doesn't even challenge the domineering Jess for her title of "The Boss".

We have had an extraordinary spring with the birth of seven kids.

Jess had triplets at the end of March, 2009.  She has again proven to be a wonderful and attentive mother.  Within hours of kidding she had licked them clean and they were blissfully digesting their first meal of rich colostrum.

Even now while Pepper, Bean and Frank are out browsing for bits of heather or thistle, Jess will summon the triplets in an instant with her loud & determined bleat.

Hope joined us in September, 2008.  As the sister to Jess it was a magical moment to watch them reunite.  They each stood with their head over the other's neck and for the first few days were inseparable...however now they are back to fighting over the feed buckets!

Hope gave birth to twins in late March, 2009.  The doelings, Grace & Glory, are full of energy and adventurous spirit.  But when it comes time for a rest you'll still find them snuggled up to mum.

Snowball and Icicle thoroughly enjoyed our beautiful spring.  This was just days before they both kidded in mid-April, 2009, each with a single kid.

As first time mums, Snowball and Icicle are proving to be top notch.

Here Bonnie is learning the ropes from mum, Snowball.

And Icicle and Basil are keeping an eye on the hill activity.

Basil and Bonnie have grown very attached to each other.  As they were both single births and goats are very social animals, it isn't suprising they have sought out each others company.
